Episode Summary

Kingsley begins with the book he nearly abandoned. The Threshold: The Forces of Techno-Materialism and the Struggle for Humanity's Soul became both a warning and a personal reckoning—an attempt to name the forces drawing human life toward deeper technological dependence.

He traces techno-materialism through AI companionship, social isolation, the attention economy, and what he calls “smooth captivity”: a condition in which convenience quietly erodes attention, agency, and contact with the living world.

The conversation then turns toward creative imagination and Sage Talks. Kingsley describes setting aside conventional research to enter written dialogues with figures from several traditions, using the process to question where intelligence begins and whether reality is more participatory than materialism allows. His practical challenge is simple: set boundaries around technology and reclaim the attention required for a fully human life.

A private bonus continuation with Kingsley—on creative work, uncertainty, mortality, and the person behind the ideas—is available in the members archive.
