Matt is a US Military Combat veteran, PTSD survivor, and Founder Matt has been on the front lines of drug policy advocacy and reform in regards to plant medicine and using unorthodox treatment methods to treat PTSD and trauma since 2013. Matt served in the hundredandfirst Airborne Division in Afghanistan where an accident sent him home injured, traumatized and suffering from crippling PTSD. Matt is the founder of Veterans for Natural rights. An organization that aims to build community, support, and resources for veterans that are suffering with PTSD and trauma. He was also previously the president of the weed for warriors project in Colorado and host of the 1620 show on the veterans channel. He is one of the people featured in the documentary we’re going to be talking about tonight called “From shock to Awe”.

Episode 153 – Carlos Tanner – Healing Trauma/PTSD – Plant Medicine, Ayahuasca

Carlos Tanner is the Director of the Ayahuasca Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Iquitos, Peru In 2017, Carlos opened the Risobo Ayahuasca Research Center, a research and healing center which will study the effects of ayahuasca and plant medicine on such issues as childhood trauma and chronic pain, PTSD, abuse and many others. In this conversation we talk about healing trauma with the use of these sacred medicines.

McKenna received his post-doctorate fellowships in the Lab of Clinical Pharmacology at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and in the Department of Neurology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He recently completed a project, funded by the Stanley Medical Research Institute, to study the Amazonian ethnomedicine for the treatment of schizophrenia and cognitive deficits. This episode was nothing short of hilarious, where Dennis and I both have a beer together and get into the trenches of science and plant ecology. This is an absolutely phenomenal, information-packed episode which you will LOVE!

Dennis Mckenna P.hD. has been doing research in the field of ethnopharmacology for over 30 years. He is a researcher, scientist, author, lecturer and founding board member of ethnopharmacology at the Hefter Research Institute. Dr. McKenna received his Master’s degree in botany at the University of Hawaii in 1979.  He received his doctorate in botanical sciences in 1984 from the University of British Columbia, where he wrote his dissertation entitled: “Monoamine oxidase inhibitors in Amazonian hallucinogenic plants: ethnobotanical, phytochemical, and pharmacological investigations”.
